Stroke is a common ailment of the elderly. A stroke occurs when there is a blockage in the pathways leading to the brain. This can leave a patient severely disabled in a number of ways, including being incontinent.

The neurological pathways that control both bladder and bowel function can be seriously affected by a stroke. This can be permanent or temporary depending on the severity and the recovery rate of the patient. Studies indicate that the rate and amount of incontinence varies, but can be found to some degree in about 79% of stroke patients. This leaves caregivers with another serious condition to help their loved one manage as they recover from a stroke.

State of the Art Age in Place Demonstration Center - Progress

In May, the Founders of The CareGiver Partnership began constructing an Age in Place demonstration center to focus attention on new building design that will allow baby boomer to remain in their homes much longer.

Patients with an underactive bladder are unable to produce an effective voiding (emptying) contraction. This is sometimes referred to as voiding difficulty. The International Continence Society refers to the condition of detrusor under activity, defined as a contraction of reduced strength and/or duration, resulting in prolonged bladder emptying and/or failure to achieve complete bladder emptying within a usual time span. It is characterized by the loss of usual sensation of the bladder filling and failure of the detrusor muscle to contract as forcefully as it should, resulting in incomplete bladder emptying. This condition has also been referred to as a hypotonic or flaccid bladder or detrusor hypoactivity. The prevalence of underactive bladder remains unknown.
