Home Monitoring Systems For the Elderly

Consider a home monitoring system for the elderly

When it comes to senior care there are hundreds, if not thousands of products an individual could buy, each touting their reasons you simply “can’t live without” this or that. This can make any caregiver or senior skeptical about whether or not the items are truly needed, or if they are just being sucked in by another marketing ploy. The following, however, are three reasons why you should consider a home monitoring system for the elderly:
Reason one: Helps seniors maintain independence.

The cost of living in a care facility is often far beyond the means of a senior. Staying in one’s home can be a cost effective alternative to a nursing home or senior care facility. In addition, aging in place is often a more attractive option to seniors. Elderly who want to live alone should consider a home monitoring system. They can help make the home more secure and reduce the risks associated with living alone. In other words, a home monitoring system is a tool that encourages independent living.

Reason two: Provides peace of mind to seniors and caregivers.
This may seem very similar to the first reason, but let’s take a look at how a home monitoring system works.

First, you have to summon help. This is done by pushing the help button worn as a pendent around the neck. With Philips Lifeline with AutoAlert, you get the added protection of fall detection, which can alert help when you are unable to push the button yourself (such as if you are unconscious after a fall).

Next, you will hear a live voice reassuring you. LifeLine has a call center open 24 hours a day, and a trained associate will answer, access your profile, and assess the situation in order to determine what help is needed.

Last, help is sent. The associate will contact a neighbor, family member, or emergency services based on your needs, and follow up to confirm help has arrived.

Knowing this process, and that you have someone watching out for your 24 hours a day can be very reassuring, and provide a peace of mind that is difficult to obtain otherwise.

Reason three: Offers greater protection than a cell phone.
Many seniors and caregivers alike think that a monitoring system is overkill, as many seniors these days now carry cell phones with them when they are out, and could always use that to call for help. While this is true outside the home in many instances, in the home, most seniors do not keep their cell phone on their person. Cell phones are not waterproof. Cell phones are not always charged. Cell phones do not always have service. Cell phones can be difficult to use when disoriented, in pain, etc. Thus, a home monitoring system like LifeLine with AutoAlert is a helpful option as it has the Auto feature, and an easy to use pendent call button to insure help will be there when needed.
