Adult Encopresis

Find the right size and products for your needs
Adult Encopresis is defined as a type of fecal incontinence, or the inability to control the passage of or loss of liquid, gas, and/or solid stool. In other words, it is a condition where small amounts of fecal matter leak through the anis. It is often caused by either chronic constipation or chronic diarrhea. A good treatment and management plan are needed.
According to a recent study by the National Institutes of Health, one in ten Americans, are estimate to have some degree of fecal incontinence. Research suggests that 2.2% of women who have delivered a child experience fecal incontinence. 33% of elderly experience bowel control issues, and 23% of those who have suffered a stroke. The severity varies from mild to total incontinence. 2% of the adult population has daily or weekly episodes of fecal incontinence. And 7.4% of males and 6.9% of females experience only minor incontinence, defined as less than 2 tsp of stool.

Whether you experience total incontinence, or are just the victim of skid marks on your undergarments, if you have been diagnosed with Encopresis, these are the mistakes to avoid:

Mistake one: Not talking to your doctor or seeking treatment. Fecal incontinence is an embarrassing problem, but often one that can be treated and solved. By keeping it to yourself and not seeking treatment, you are condemning yourself to having to live with it, when it may be something that a dietary change, lifestyle change, or some form of medication or therapy can fix. A published study of sacral nerve stimulation to treat urge fecal incontinence recently showed 83% of patients experienced a 50% or greater improvement in their fecal incontinence episodes. In 41% of the patients, the treatment resulted in continence.

Talk to your doctor, and look for treatment options.

Mistake two: Overspending on the wrong management products. While seeking treatment it is important to manage the symptoms of adult encopresis. According to consumer research done by Kimberly-Clarks, the average consumer buying incontinence products for the first time wastes $130 in trial and error purchases before finding the right products for their needs. Do not let this happen to you. Instead, learn more and talk to a product specialist call 800-985-1353 M-F 9-4 Central. Mistake three: Disregarding lifestyle changes. Lifestyle changes can greatly impact the severity of adult encopresis. A change in diet, an increase in exercise, or a combination of the above can reduce symptoms, and help speed up the effectiveness of treatment. Talk to a dietician or nutritionist, and to a doctor, and put their suggestions into place.
